Corktown: What’s up in the neighbourhood?

Corktown is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Toronto found on Queen East from Sherbourne to the Don Valley Parkway. Established in the 1800s, the name derives from County Cork in Ireland due to the many Irish immigrants that came to work in Canadian breweries and brickyards.

The area is rich in history, with Toronto’s first free school, the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, built here in 1848. Traditional Victorian row houses line the streets where some of Toronto’s oldest churches were erected, such as the Italianate Church, Little Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Basilica (the first Roman Catholic Church in Toronto).

With tons of potential, this quaint neighbourhood is undergoing remarkable transformation with many new condos, live-in studios and lofts being built. The West Don Development Project is also taking place along the banks of the west river, estimated to bring many additional residents into South Corktown. Some plans for growth include an 18-acre Don River park, one million square feet of employment space, cycling paths, and community spaces such as childcare centres and schools.

Nestled in the corner of Queen Street East and River Street, our distinguished Corktown Mews townhomes are located minutes away from many diverse neighbourhoods and amenities: Riverdale, Leslieville, the St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery District, the DVP,George Brown College, Cabbagetown, Jimmie Simpson Park and the TTC.

Peter Comyns, sales manager of PMA Brethour, says:

“This is an opportunity to buy a freehold condo in the vibrant King/Queen area. You can buy a brand new townhouse of your own; you’re able to choose flexible floor plans, a garage with storage and a private terrace, and you’re within ten minutes by transit to one of North America’s major financial markets [Bay and King].”

We are thrilled about the future of this neighbourhood and we are proud to be part of its growth.
